1914 VINTAGE COLOUR LITHOGRAPH

SMITHWOOD COMMON
SURREY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
ARTIST - JAMES S. OGILVY

Approximate Size of image: 7.75 X 5.5 inches
Approximate Overall Size With Margins: 10.75 X 8.25 inches

From the original description. - Smithwood Common has no history, a few small houses and one fine old farm on its boundaries ; but it is prettily situated under the hills, and is one of the best types of Surrey common. The finest view is from the southern end, looking over a great expanse of old furze, but I found this only a collection of burnt stumps and blackened ground. The view given is a fairly characteristic one, showing the road leading upwards to Winterfold Heath. This hill at the southern end is densely covered with scrub, beech, oak, and fir and little can be seen ; but a short distance northwards there are open spaces with solitary trees here and there among the golden bracken, and fine views of Clandon Downs St. Martha's Chapel, and westward along the Hog's Back until it is lost in the distant haze.
