George Franklin Cram (1842 - 1928) was part of Sherman's army during the American Civil War. He engaged in a number of key conflicts, including Sherman's famous "march to the sea". In 1867, George F. Cram and his uncle, Rufus Blanchard, founded Blanchard and Cram in Evanston, Illinois. The company manufactured and sold maps and Atlases. In 1869 George F. Cram became the sole owner of the company, moved the company to Chicago and changed the name to the George F. Cram Company. The company progressed to being suppliers for travelling Book Salesmen. In 1871 after the great Chicago fire, the company was rebuilt and renamed as the Cram Map Depot. The company published an extensive selection of maps & atlases. After 54 years of manufacturing maps and atlases George F. Cram retired after 54 years and sold his company in May 1921. He died seven years later in March of 1928. |
