1890s Colour Antique Map CARNIOLA AUSTRIAN LITTORAL,1894 Antique Colour Map HISTORICAL MAP CHART - RAIL AND ROUTE MAP
The Austrian Littoral (German: Österreichisches Küstenland, Italian: Litorale Austriaco, Slovenian: Avstrijsko primorje) or Küstenland (Litorale, Primorska) was a crown land (Kronland) within the Austrian Empire (later Austria-Hungary) from 1813 to 1918.
Carniola (Slovenian: Kranjska; German: Krain) is a traditional and historical region of Slovenia. As part of Austria-Hungary, the region was a crown land officially known as the Duchy of Carniola (Vojvodstvo Kranjsko/Herzogtum Krain) until 1918. The region is subdivided into Upper Carniola, Lower Carniola (with White Carniola), and Inner Carniola. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lombards settled in Carniola, followed by Slovenians around the AD 6th century. Following periods of Bavarian, Frankish and local rule, the Austrian Habsburgs controlled the territory almost continuously from 1335 to 1918, but many Ottoman raids and peasant rebellions occurred from the 15th to the 17th centuries. From about AD 900 until the 20th century, Carniola's ruling classes spoke German. The capital of Carniola, originally situated at Kranj (Krainburg), was later moved to the current capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana (Laibach). The duchy ceased to exist in 1918, when it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
