BIOGRAPHY - Philippe Rousseau (1816-1887), French
Largely self-taught as a painter, Rousseau made his debut at the prestigious
French Salon in 1834 and exhibited there through 1877. Rousseau was
highly successful and well patronized in his lifetime; he painted decorative
murals for Baron de Rothschild and for Princess Mathilde (a cousin to
Napoleon III), who bought two of his canvases. In the middle of his
career, the artist focused on still-life and animal paintings, often
using the subject matter to comment allegorically on human nature. Noted
for his attention to detail, Rousseau himself was a great admirer of
seventeenth-century Dutch still life.
