PRINT SHOWS: The Adirondack Mountains make up a circular region that is part of the Grenville
Province, a large belt of basement rock. The region is divided into the Central
Highlands and the Northwest Lowlands, which are separated by the Carthage-Colton
Mylonite Zone. It was once covered by the same layers of sedimentary rock that
now surround it, but recent uplift and erosion have exposed the basement. Seen
from space, the region has several prominent features: long, straight valleys;
gently curved ridges and valleys; and a radial drainage pattern.
