Alexander Nevsky (1220-1263) Prince of Novgorod in 1236-1251.
Grand Prince of Vladimir since 1252. Yaroslav II's son. Secured the west frontiers
of Rus in the result of victorious battles with Sweden (Battle on Neva, 1240)
and Teutonic Knights (battle of Ice of Lake Chudskoe called "Ledovoe
Poboishche" 1242). Due to his clever policy he reduced the Tatar-Mongol
occupation.
After the time long and relentless domination tatare which had
reduced Russia in a lamentable state, Dimitri renovated the kingdom and the
Church, thus preparing the emancipation of the Mongolian yoke. He was helped
there by saint Serge de Radonège and holy Theodore de Rostov. He reunified
the Russian principalities of Souzdal, of Riazan and of Tver, faced Tatares
and Lituaniens, then, in the plain of Koulikovo, its victory over the Gold
Horde marked the spiritual and national alarm clock of the Russian people.
Tatares continued their incusions, but it could contain them without never
overcoming them completely.
