CARRIAGE FOR CANNONS, LAFFETE,HISTORICAL MECHANICAL MILITARIA PRINT,1894 Original Antique Wood Engraving
A carriage (l'affût of franz.) is a usually mobile rack, on which a weapon can be installed. A lafettierte weapon can be arranged more exactly and the setback can be reduced. The history of the carriages is closely bound to the history of the cannons, since cannons always need a firm document contrary to hand-held weapons. Into this document integrated also the devices are for the height and side direction. The simplest carriages, like for the infantry weapon of the garnet thrower, consist only of a larger board with carrying handles and mounting plates for the pipe. The first Bombarden was installed on firm racks from timber beams and the like. A Schildzapfen on both sides of the pipe made later the elevator direction possible. With the development of the field artillery the carriages, still from wood, were provided with large wheels and were appropriate for horse course. In the range of the ship artillery the large wheel carriages were rather hinderlich, here the size of the wheels were made smaller and the lower deck height adapted. For the march the cannon one up-showed off, i.e. the carriage connected with in such a way specified show off, a truck with one axle, before which the horses became strained. In order to make the cannon again ready to fire, it had to be abgeprotzt before. With the triumphant advance of the steel into the building of cannons also the carriages were made of steel. The introduction of the recoil made it possible in connection with the spur attached at the carriage to provide now the carriage calmly standing with the shot with a shield. The introduction of the Hinterladers made the installation possible of the cannons with the ship artillery into armored rotating turrets. A further development step was the invention of the spreading carriage, whose carriage tail could be folded up to transport, be driven however apart into position. Thereby up to then on for instance 5° for each side limited side arranging directing toward over 45° for each side was increased. With the Lafettierung of heavy cannons to railway rails running carriages one fell back, the railway cannons in such a way specified. These carriages cannot be arranged after the side, here are shifted the railway rails in an elbow and the cannon can be arranged in such a way. Such so-called shooting curves were if necessary particularly put on. Due to the extreme loads partial special reinforcement at the track were made. The heaviest railway cannons needed even double tracks. Motorizing made possible also with the field gun driving an even and for concomitantly far armored carriage. The development reached up to the invention of the tank, which represents in principle a heavily armored carriage with rotating turret. In contrast to it assault guns without rotating turrets are equipped. With funerals of higher military personalities and with state funerals with “military honours” serves often a cannon carriage with shows off for the transport of the Sarges during a mourning removal.
