CATHEDRAL DE LIEGE - DOM ZU LUTTICH
LIEGE is one of the most important cultural historical and economic
cities of southern Belgium. From the 10th to the 18th century Liège
was a powerful bishopric. The power of the prince bishops came to an end in
1794 when the city fell to the French, whose rule was succeeded by the Dutch
until 1830. The fact that Liège citizens have always resisted oppression
has given the city a certain fiery reputation, borne out by the many uprisings
against authority. One such uprising was against Charles the Bold, who in
the 15th century burned most of the city to the ground. He later repented
this act, and presented the city with a golden reliquary which can still be
admired in the cathedral of St Paul. In the 11th and mainly 12th century Liège
was the centre for the art of the Meuse area, and the St Bartholomew's church
is a typical example of this type of architecture. The yellow brass baptismal
font of Renier de Huy is preserved in this church.
