1880 Folio Engraving - Antique Architectural Print - German Text

ITALIAN RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE

INCLUDES:

  • CREMA - town, Cremona province, Lombardia (Lombardy) region, northern Italy, on the Serio River southeast of Milan. Possibly of Celtic origin, Crema was sacked by Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in 1159 and was rebuilt in 1185. Falling to the Visconti family in 1338. Church of Sta. Maria della Croce, outside Crema, Italy, by Giovanni Battagio c. 1490
  • Santa Maria delle Grazie is a Renaissance church in Milan built by Guiniforte Solari between 1466 and 1490 on a commission by Dominican monks. Later modifications include work by Donato Bramante in 1492-1497. The church is famous for the mural of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, although the painting is actually situated in the adjacent Dominican convent; its restoration in the 1990s was very controversial since much of the painting was removed in favor of only the stratum authentically painted by Leonardo, which is much more fragmentary.
  • St. Maria di Carignano- Genoa, built on the summit of a hill, has a plan which closely follows Bramante's St. Peter's: a Greek cross within a square with a central dome and four smaller domes on the diagonals. The somewhat squat pedimented façade is flanked by two corner towers (a matching pair was intended) rising from the cornice of the pilaster order. The plainness of the exterior walls contrasts with often very elaborate architectural elements, in particular the small rectangular windows."
Theodor Schreiber- 1848- 1912 Born Strehla an der Elbe, Saxony, Germany. Died in Leipzing (?), Germany . Schreiber studied at the University of Leipzig where he studied archaeology with Johannes Overbeck (q.v.) and philology with Friedrich Ritschl (1806-1876). In 1874 through a travel stipend from the DAI (Deutsche Archäologische Institut or German Archaeological Institute) he studied in Rome with Wilhelm Henzen (1816-1887) and Wolfgang Helbig (q.v.). He traveled to Greece and after particularly important study in Athens in 1876 he returned to Rome to catalog the Ludovisi family collection of classical sculpture. He completed this in 1880. In 1885 he became associate professor at Leipzig, adding the directorship of the museum in Leipzig the following year. Schreiber published widely on Hellenistic art topics. His Kunsthistorische Bilderbogen was an early study of polychromy in art. The work was produced by Seemann, Ernst Arthur. 2 vols. Leipzig, E. A. Seemann, 1877-80.
