DR ROBERT BRADY
ROBERT Brady was born in the county of Norfolk, and admitted
in Caius College, in Cambridge, February 20, 1643. He took his degree of bachelor
of
phyfic in 1653, and was created doctor in that faculty September 5th, 1660,
by virtue of the king's mandatory letters. On the firft of December the fame
year he was, in purfuance of king Charles's mandate, eleaed mafter of his
college, upon the refignation of Dr. Bachcroft. About the year 1670 he was
appointed keeper of the records in the Tower of London; in which office, how
well he employed himfelf in perufing thofe moft valuable documents in his
poff'effion, is obvious from his hiftorical works. Some time after he was
chofen regius profeiTor of phyfic in the univerfity of Cambridge. In 1679
he wrote a letter to Dr. Sydenham, which is publifhed among that learned perfon's
works. But his largeft and moft confiderable performance was, "An lntroduction
to " the old Englifh Hiftory," and" A complete Hiftory of England,
from the " firft Entrance of the Romans, unto the End of the Reign of
King Richard II." in three vols. folio; about which he was employed feveral
years. It is asserted
by Dr. Gilbert Stuart, that this work formed the bafis of Hume's hiftory.
Dr. Brady alfo wrote A Treatife on Burghs, in thin folio. In the year 1681
he was chofen one of the reprefentatives for the univerfity of Cambridge,
in that parliament which met at Oxford; and again, in 1685, in the parliament
of king James II. He was likewife phyfician in ordinary to this king; and,
on the 22d of October, 1688, was one of thofe who gave in their depofitions
concerning the birth of the pretended prince of Wales. He died on the 19th
of Auguft, 1700. He was an accurate writer, and a curious and diligent fearcher
into our ancient records.
