The domestic goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) is a domesticated subspecies of the wild goat of southwest Asia and eastern Europe. Domestic goats are one of the oldest domesticated species. For thousands of years, they have been utilized for their milk, meat, hair, and skins all over the world. In the last century they have also gained some popularity as pets. Female goats are referred to as does or nannies, intact males as bucks or billies their offspring are kids. Castrated males are wethers. Goat meat is sometimes called chevon. PRINT SHOWS: * CAPRA IBEX - The Alpine Ibex or Capra ibex (which is commonly called by its German name, steinbock) is the species of ibex that lives in the European Alps. Spain's Capra pyrenaica and North Africa's Capra nubiana are very close relatives of the Alpine Ibex but are generally regarded as separate species. * CAPRA AEGAGRUS - The wild goat (Capra aegagrus) is a common type of goat species, with a distribution ranging from Europe and Asia Minor to central Asia and the Middle East. * CAPRA FALCONERI - The Markhor (Capra falconeri) is a goat-antelope found in sparse woodland in the Western Himalayas. "Markhor" is Persian for "Snake Eater". Markhor stand 140 to 180 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh from 40 to 100 kilograms. Females are tan in colour with a white underbelly and a pattern of black and white on the legs. Males are a lighter tan with the same white underbelly and pattern on the legs, they also have black faces and a large amount of long shaggy white fur on their neck and chest. Only males have (corkscrew) horns, which grow to a very impressive 160 centimetres. * CAPRA ANGORENSIS - The Angora goat is a goat from the Angora region in Asia Minor, near present-day Ankara. It is first mentioned in the time of Moses, roughly 1500 B.C. The first Angora goats were brought to Europe by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, about 1554, but, like later imports, were not very successful. The fleece taken from an Angora goat is called mohair.
