Atala (1801). A tale by Chateaubriand, which he originally intended to be part of Les Natchez, then integrated into his Génie du christianisme, but first published separately. Its instant success can be explained by its combination of lush North American exoticism, fatal passion, and religious sentiment, though the plot itself is not too edifying. Chactas, a Natchez who has been to France and was raised by the Christian Lopez, is captured by an enemy tribe who plan to kill him, but is saved by the young Atala, half-Spanish (Lopez is her father) and Christian, who has fallen in love with him. They flee, and after long wanderings are found in a storm by père Aubry, a French missionary who has founded a utopian Christian Indian enclave. Atala, alas, cannot marry Chactas for she has taken a vow of chastity, so she commits suicide by poison. The burial scene is particularly pathetic. The story is embedded in a series of frameworks; it is told by the blind, elderly Chactas to René, and then transmitted across the years to the author-narrator, so that we learn also of the tragic end of Aubry, massacred by the Indians.
