Vintage-Views Antique Prints and Maps :: Antique Maps :: John Tallis Decorative Maps
John Tallis and Co. was an English cartographic company which published views, maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. The company issued their Illustrated Atlas in 1851. The atlas illustrated maps of many parts of the world. Collectors desired these maps for their detailed original hand colored outlines and for the various topographical fine engraved vignette views of local scenes that decorated the maps. The maps went on to be published in other publications some of which were by Montgomery Martin and John Hinton.
Among the engravers of the beautiful vignette views were H. Warren, R. Wallis & J. B. Allen. The beautiful detailed maps were usually drawn and engraved by John Rapkin. The scrolled borders are typical of a John Tallis type production which have adorned many other views and portraitures. (see our Lodge's Portraits).
