DESCRIPTION:
The French artist Jeanne-Madeleine Lemaire was well-known for her flower
paintings and portraits. Her studies began with an aunt who was a miniaturist,
and continued later with Chaplin. She received the Legion of Honour in 1906
and was a member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts which rarely recognized
women artists. The great French writer Proust visited her popular studio salon
and immortalized her as the elegant hostess Madame Verdurin in his novels (movie
version: Time Regained). She illustrated his first book of short stories, Pleasures
and Days (1896).
