MOYNE ABBEY,Mayo County,Views of Ireland,1884 Antique Wood Engraving Historical Collectible Art Print
Moyne Abbey, built in the late Irish Gothic style,
was founded by the Burke family as a Franciscan friary and consecrated
in 1462. It was destroyed in the 1590's by Queen Elizabeth's
governor of Connaught, Sir Richard Bingham. The Abbey's church
has an interesting architectural feature - it is cruciform in
shape, and has a bell tower suspended over it's channel arch.
