This rare print by the author/artist james S Ogilvy represents old english architecture and topography from the early 1900s.
Old Surrey Hall is marked on the Ordnance Map, and I have seen occasional references to it as an interesting building ; but inquiries in Lingfield brought no result, even from officials of the district council-" Never heard of it" was the invariable answer. My curiosity was aroused about this mysterious place, and, finding that Mr. Boorer, my landlord, knew the country well, I prevailed on him to start with a pony and trap on a voyage of discovery, choosing Blockfield Farm, the nearest to it on the map, as an objective ; he had been there, but there was no road to it. This was strange in an old settled region like Surrey. However, we started and trotted south-cast towards the corner of the county, past the racecourse and Dormans Land, a modern villa district of Lingfield, where the lilac and apple-blossom filled every garden with rich colour ; the road climbs steadily upwards, opening out wide views of the weald behind us; past Ford Manor, now a fine modern mansion and the woods beyond, where the blue bells faded into the distance like a summer sea, obscuring the pale yellow of the myriad primrose which had bloomed before them, to be in turn covered up by the bracken and undergrowth now unfolding the fresh green of early summer ; here and there an oast-house, and a patch of hops remain of what was once a considerable industry here past Lady Gross Farm, and presently my companion thinks this is it, at a gate in a grass field ; one after another, these are crossed, and then a slightly defined track of sandstone rut and boulders succeeds the smoother grass, still more gates and fields, and a very rough lane leads to the yard of Blockfield Farm, with its oast-house and barns, live stock in general, and a young fox terrier playing at hide-and-seek with a litter of small black pigs. Beyond, through the blossoming orchard trees, there is a glimpse of an ancient timbered house, towards which I crossed the moat heralded by barking dogs, knocked and inquired of the farmer's wife if she knew a place named Surrey- Hall. Yes ; this is the house, though few people use the name. now. Knowing my companion, she was quite willing to allow me to sketch.
