Bohemia / Dux (Duchkov): Today, the former Austrian town of 'Dux' (located north-west of Prague) lies in the Czech Republic and was renamed to 'Duchkov'. Duxer Porzellanfabrik (1853 until ????) The porcelain production was introduced in West Bohemia thanks to the efforts of specialists from Thuringia. In the year 1794 the first Bohemian porcelain was produced in Klášterec (production from this factory is still ongoing and is trademarked 'THUN'). Production facilities started to develop rapidly in the region around the town 'Karlovy Vary' (the former 'Carlsbad') as rich kaolin deposits could be found there. Around the town of Teplice, similar favourable conditions for production existed in the form of coal deposits as an energy source next to large deposists of kaolin. After the construction of the Ústí to Most railway line the transport of raw materials and products was a lot easier. In the 1860's, only three factories existed in the region of Teplice. Ten years later there were eight, rising to twelve in the 1880's. But at the end of the twentieth century, the region boasted an impressive number of nearly thirty factories. Among the first factories was the one in Dux (now 'Duchcov') that was founded in the year 1853. After the first timid attempts in producing utility ceramic goods from raw materials mined in the closest surroundings, the factory was bought by the modelling expert Eduard Eichler and renamed into 'Eduard Eichler Thonwaren-Fabrik'. During 1862, Eduard Eichler also bought the small factory in Šelty near Ceská Lípa. The company experienced a period of prosperity and the goods produced here were mainly from terracota, faience and majolica. The designs based on products from Copenhagen, Worcester and Sevrés and were very successful. In 1878 the Eichler company was awarded the Silver Medal at the Paris exhibition.
