Most of the year the Chott el Jerid holds little or no water, and can be crossed by foot or by vehicles. During these periods, the chott is cut by small creeks, transporting surplus water from the season of rainfalls. The chott has little economical importance, as its water is salty, and the immediate surrounding land is not allowing any agriculture. All settlements along the chott, are located with a distance from the shores. There are no fisheries performed in the chott, due to its being dry large parts of the year.
