SIR JOHN HOTHAM,RARE PRINT ,Biograhical Memoirs,Illustrious Personages,1799 Antique Copper Engraving Historical Collectible Art Portrait Engraving from an Original Painting - LARGE FOLIO SIZE COPPER ENGRAVING
Sir John Hotham, (the elder), d.1645 - Gained military experience
in Germany c.1618-24 under the Elector Palatine, then Count Mansfeld. Knighted
by King James I in 1621. Hotham was MP for Beverly, Yorkshire, in all parliaments
from 1625. He was an ally of Strafford as Lord President of the North, and
was appointed governor of Hull in 1635. However, in 1639 King Charles appointed
Sir John Glenham governor in his place, after which Hotham went into opposition
to the King. As the site of the main arsenal in the north of England, Hull
was of vital importance. Parliament reappointed Hotham governor of Hull in
1642 with specific instructions not to deliver the town or its arsenal without
Parliament's authority. Hotham barred the city gates and refused entrance
to the King himself when he tried to secure it for the Royalists in April
1642.
