VOLGA RIVER - Rising in the Valdai Hills 225 m (740 ft) above sea level north-west of Moscow and about 320 kilometres south-east of Saint Petersburg, the Volga heads east past Tver', Dubna, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan (Qazan). From there it turns south, flows past Tolyatti, Samara and Volgograd, and discharges into the Caspian Sea below Astrakhan at 28 metres below sea level. At its most strategic point, it bends toward the Don ("the big bend"), which bends toward it. Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, is placed there.
The Daugava or Western Dvina (Latvian: Daugava, Belarusian:Polish: Dz'wina, German Düna, Estonian Väinä) is a river rising in the Valdai Hills, flowing through Russia, Belarus, and Latvia, draining into the Gulf of Riga, an arm of the Baltic Sea. The total length of the river is 1,020 km (633.7 mi.).
