FRENCH GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE - CATHEDRALS IN FRANCE
- ST PIERRE CATHEDRAL IN CAEN, NORMANDY - The Église St-Pierre (St.
Peter's Church) is a fine example of the transition between Gothic and Renaissance
forms. St-Pierre was built on the south side of the castle in the 13th and
14th centuries, and an impressively ornate Renaissance east end was added
in the early 16th century. Inside, the nave features pointed Gothic arches
and exuberant Renaissance-style vaulting is above the choir. Directly over
the altar is a life-size, sculpted likeness of the St. Peter, the church's
namesake.
- CATHEDRAL OF CHARTRES - The Cathedral of Chartres ("Cathedral of
Our Lady of Chartres," French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres),
located in Chartres, about 50 miles from Paris, is considered the finest
example in all France of the "high Gothic" style of architecture.
Construction of a new building on the Romanesque foundations was begun in
1145, but a fire in 1194 destroyed all but the west front of the cathedral
(and much of the town), so that part is in the "early Gothic" style. The body of the cathedral was rebuilt between 1194 and 1220, a remarkably
short span for medieval cathedrals.
