Gothic architecture is a style of architecture, particularly associated with cathedrals and other churches, which flourished in Europe during the high and late medieval period. Beginning in 12th century France, it was known as "the French Style" during the period, with the term Gothic first appearing in the Reformation era as a stylistic insult. It was succeeded by Renaissance architecture beginning in Florence in the 15th century. A series of Gothic revivals began in mid-18th century England, spread through 19th century Europe and continued, largely for ecclesiastical and university structures, into the 20th century.

Theodor Schreiber- 1848- 1912 Born Strehla an der Elbe, Saxony, Germany. Died in Leipzing (?), Germany . Schreiber studied at the University of Leipzig where he studied archaeology with Johannes Overbeck (q.v.) and philology with Friedrich Ritschl (1806-1876). In 1874 through a travel stipend from the DAI (Deutsche Archäologische Institut or German Archaeological Institute) he studied in Rome with Wilhelm Henzen (1816-1887) and Wolfgang Helbig (q.v.). He traveled to Greece and after particularly important study in Athens in 1876 he returned to Rome to catalog the Ludovisi family collection of classical sculpture. He completed this in 1880. In 1885 he became associate professor at Leipzig, adding the directorship of the museum in Leipzig the following year. Schreiber published widely on Hellenistic art topics. His Kunsthistorische Bilderbogen was an early study of polychromy in art. The work was produced by Seemann, Ernst Arthur. 2 vols. Leipzig, E. A. Seemann, 1877-80.
