MASCARENE ISLANDS (occasionally MASCARENHAS), the collective title of a group in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, viz. Mauritius, Reunion and Rodriguez . The collective title is derived from the Portuguese navigator Mascarenhas, by whom Reunion, at first called Mascarenhas, was discovered.
