He was the third son of Charles, second Lord Viscount Townsend.,
secretary of State and minister to George I , and George II . by his first
wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Lord Pelham of Laughton, father to Thomas
Holles, Duke of Newcastle, and to the right honorable Henry Pelham. He was
born June 2, 1701, and educated first at Eton scholl, and afterwards at King's
College , in the University of Cambridge, for both which seminaries he preserved
the most affectionate regard to the end of his life.
