THE MARSHES OF SALPI,Naples,Southern Italy,Antique Map HISTORICAL MAP CHART
Margherita di Savoia - Up to 1879, when it took on its present name, this town was called Salina di Barletta (The Barletta Salt-works). Stretching along the south coast of the Gulf of Manfredoma, the area is noted for its spas and is also vitally important as a center for the production of salt. It developed, in fact, due to the presence of the State Salt works, and its center is made up of three straight, parallel roads around two kilometers long. The territory is dominated by the salt works, which stretch for 20 kilometers along the coast, covering an area of 4000 hectares in which are situated almost 500 cisterns for the preservation of salt. These are the most ancient and important in Italy and go back as far as the III century B.C.
The plain of Manfredonia and what was once the Lake of Salpi, is now a marshy area also known as the "sandbanks " of the Cervaro and the Celone rivers
