About a mile west from Shere, near Sherbourne Farm, is the pretty little bit of scenery known as the Silent Pool, which has obtained more than local fame largely owing to its introduction into a novel written by the late Martin Tupper, who was a resident in this district. The story given there has been adopted as true, much in the same wa as the "Lady of the y Lake" has grown to he a tradition of the Trossachs. While painting there 1 heard the story of the drowned lovers related by casual visitors so often that it became quite familiar fortunately, 1 have forgotten the particulars. The pool is merely the spring head of the Shere bourne, rising at the bottom of the chalk strata, much in the same way as the springs at Ewell, and at several places on the Wandle and really it is not so picturesque as the larger pond into which it overflows, yet, in the still autumn days as 1 saw it, there is no denying its beauty. Lying in a hollow surrounded by densely wooded banks, the unrufred surface reflects the varied tints above, while the colour is also influenced by the refracted light and the tints of the chalk bottom, with the weeds growing there.
