Bellows Falls , industrial village of Rockingham town, Windham co., SE Vt., on terraces above the Connecticut R. (2 bridges), and 20 mi/32 km N of Brattleboro; 43°08'N 72°27'W. Makes paper (industry begun 1802), wood prods., furniture, and precision instruments; ships dairy prods. Navigation canal and lock, said to have been begun (1792) in U.S., was completed 1802 around 50-ft/15-m falls (once called “Great Falls”) here; used for some time after arrival of RR (1849; 1st in Vt.) and rebuilt (1926-1928) as part of hydroelectric power development. The 1st bridge over Connecticut R. was built here (1785).
