VLADIMIR I
c.950 - 1015 Russian Ruler Saint Vladimir I created a united Russian state
and introduced Christianity as a state religion. Vladimir, son of the prince
of Kiev, became ruler of Kiev and Novgorod. He consolidated the Russian lands
from the Ukraine to the Baltic. Vladimir aided the Byzantine emperor to fight
a rebellion in exchange for the emperor's sister in marriage. He also consented
to become a Christian, after which he ordered the Christian conversion of
Kiev and Novgorod.
JARASLAV- 1019-1054. Ruler of Gårdarike (present Russia),
resided in Koenugård (Kiev) and Holmgård (Hólmgardr, Novgorod).
Jaroslav was the son of Vladimir the Great. After lengthy struggles about
the throne against his brothers he came into possession of the throne in Kiev
and became accepted as king of the largest part of Russia. He had lively relations
with several royal houses in Scandinavia and in other countries. He got married
with Ingegärd, the daughter of the Swedish king Olof Skötkonung.
Jaroslav´s oldest daughter Elisavjeta (Ellisiv), was married to the
Norwegian king Harald Hardrádi.
