English statesman. Member (1667-73) of the Cabal at Charles II's court, he held a number of offices, rising to acting secretary of state and lord treasurer (1672). He was created Baron Clifford in 1672. Henry Bennet, earl of Arlington, and Clifford, both alleged Roman Catholics, knew of the secret clauses of the Treaty of Dover (1670), which provided for the reestablishment of Roman Catholicism in England. He was forced to resign by passage of the Test Act (1673), which excluded Roman Catholics from office. He died soon afterward, possibly by suicide. .

A beautiful elaborate fleur de lis scrollwork decorative border surrounds the image, with a tiny vignette at the top of the portrait image. The vignette represents the family coat of arms or crest. The celtic like scrollwork surrounding the portrait is a beautiful work of art. A great historical portrait print for a genealogy buff looking for family heritage type prints.

CONDITION: Suitable browning from age with mild spotting on outside margin area, otherwise in Very Good Condition. Portrait Image and scrollwork area is clean, clear and sharp with beautiful detail and in Very Good Condition. Blank on Reverse side and printed heavier paper. This beautiful print would look great matted and framed. A paper restorer may be able to clean brown spots but you may also want to keep this print in it's authentic auntique condition. An art supply store can provide you with a selection of frames for old art treasures.
